A Look At The Over 130 Radio Tracks That Were Dropped For GTA V’s Final Build

October 26, 2013 by Rory Mitchell in All, Gaming, Video Games

GTA_V_radio_stations_VoltAnyone who has played any Grand Theft Auto title will know that the radio is a key part of the gameplay. It can introduce you to new music, or allow you to listen to your favourite track whilst taking part in a bank job heist, in an attempt to calm your nerves as you try to escape from the fuzz. The music selection in GTA V is varied, but its also inconsistent. You could be listening to a station like “Non-Stop Pop FM” and in it you would have songs from the 80′s such as Wham!’s “Everything She Wants,” then songs from todays era of music such as Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In The World).” Both sound worlds apart and – to reiterate – inconsistent.

But its that inconsistency that reflects the time spent developing GTA V. Here we have a game that has been in development since 2009 and only just went gold master sometime in June/July this year. Naturally you are going to have changes down the line to things like the song lineup on the radio, in the same way you would have changes to a particular mission dynamic. In fact, Rockstar changed the radio song lineup soo much for GTA V, that they actually ended up dropping over 130 songs before the game finally went GM. And by the power of connections and sources, GTAGaming were kind enough to let us in on the songs that were dropped by Rockstar earlier this week.

The lineup includes music from Oasis, Tears For Fears, Friendly Fires, Bob Dylan, The Clash, Jackson Five, Kanye West, Kylie Minogue, and many more you can read by clicking the drop down menu button below this paragraph.

You can probably see where some of the music could have fitted in. “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears for example, probably would have paired The Pet Shop Boy’s “West End Girls” on Non-Stop Pop FM, which was presumably an 80s music radio station that perhaps Michael would’ve listened to, reflecting his mid-life crisis status. “Surrender” by Cheap Trick meanwhile, might have been a track for Rock Radio and something that Michael’s son, Jimmy might have listened to. The two generations ultimately contrasting one-another, which is a theme we see a lot of in GTA’s popular culture infested universe.

Its certainly an interesting look at how developers argue over particular pieces of information during the development of a major title. Kind of makes me think of what missions were perhaps scrapped due to one reason or another, throughout the five years it took Rockstar to make this game.
