Disney will be offering its new Pixar created ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ as an online digital download first, before it gets sold in stores as a Blu-Ray or DVD. The title will be available to download digitally February 12th – which is actually four days after the UK theatre release – then will later be available for physical, on-demand and standard-defintition purchase on March 5th.
This is all part of the industry’s larger “Digital HD” push. Several studios have already adopted this early release method, including the producers of Prometheus and Taken 2 [both 20th Century Fox] which were also available digitally before their physical home video release. Of course all of the major digital media outlets like Apple, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft take part in the Digital HD program, but whilst not all titles are released like this just yet, its certainly a trend that could catch on if it sees good numbers.
The pricing of Wreck-It Ralph is currently unconfirmed, although the titles just named saw a price of $14.99 [£9.99] for their early digital release.
